Hydrological monitoring of Tina Hydro

Tina River, Solomon Islands 2025 - Current

The Tina River Hydro Development Project is a national project of the Solomon Islands. This, the first large utility-scale renewable energy project, is designed to increase the amount of renewable energy in the Honiara grid by nearly 70 percent, while reducing reliance on diesel power. As a result, the project aims to transform Honiara’s energy grid to provide affordable, reliable, sustainable and clean electricity to its people and cut reliance on imported fossil fuels, resulting in a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Fluvio has been engaged to support the project by completing hydrological and sediment monitoring in the Tina River. The findings will be used to calculate sediment loads, flow ratings and mean flow for energy calculations. This monitoring has been completed using computer vision stream gauging systems, real time water level stations (sending 1 minute data), real time water quality stations (sending 10-minute data), sediment analysis and manual gauging. Due to the remote and extreme nature of the site, bespoke power and communication solutions have been developed to ensure reliability in a remote and complex environment.
