Data management system design and training

Honiara, Solomon Islands 2025 - 2026

The Water Resources Division (WRD), operating under the Ministry of Mines, Energy, and Rural Electrification, is responsible for the collection, management, and dissemination of hydrological data throughout the Solomon Islands. Up until this project, WRD maintained a largely unstructured and inaccessible archive of historical hydrological data. While WRD continued to complete ongoing data collection programs, the absence of a data management system significantly limited its operational effectiveness.

Through a participatory co-designed approach, Fluvio has developed an innovative and sustainable pilot data management system, SIWIS (Solomon Islands Water Information System), for WRD. The SIWIS platform enhances WRD’s ability to collect, securely store, and meaningfully analyse hydrological data to support evidence-based water management decisions. The project has been supported by dedicated training to support the collection and use of hydrological data.

The project has included:

· Development and design of a bespoke data management system

· Training across topics including GIS, hydrology, data collection, data storage and data security

· Development of data collection, dissemination and management strategies

· Cost benefit analysis of data management solutions.
